The 2012 North Atlantic Hurricane Season officially ended on Friday November 30, 2012, however the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is reminding the public to continue utilizing best practices that can reduce risk and save lives as it relates to rainfall and flooding. Therefore focus should be shifted to implementing the necessary measures and making preparations for the upcoming Traditional Dry Season, which begins January 1 to April 30, 2013.

At this time the public is being asked to pay attention to water conservation and water harvesting methods. It is important for persons to be conscious of the amount of water used and seek ways to use less or re-use water whenever possible.

As we approach the Traditional Dry Season the public is also advised to take the following precautions:

1.         During the windy period be on the alert to prevent bush and domestic fires.

2.        Avoid using matches while in dry grassy areas.

3.        Smokers, ensure that cigarette butts, matches and other materials are extinguished before disposal.
