JPS has been making significant strides toward the development of the 2^nd Maggotty Hydroelectric Power Plant which is expected to add 6.3MW to the national grid, upon completion in November 2013.  Preparatory work thus far has created 30 jobs, with this number expected to rise as the project continues.  The Company has committed US$33M to the building of this new plant – the largest single investment in the hydro power sector, since the nation’s independence in 1962.

The energy Company has already started work on: access roads to the site and pipelines; a site office; and a temporary cement batching plant.  The Company has also commenced casting of pipe support cradles, which are being constructed off site.  Within the last fortnight, JPS imported approximately 2 km of Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) pipes into the island, for this project.  These pipes are specially designed to handle high water volume and pressure.  They are also superior to the current wood stave pipes – which are currently used and which require more maintenance.  

With regard to design details, a detailed Design Workshop was held with the EPC Contractors and their engineers, in which details of the civil, mechanical and electrical systems, were reviewed and fine tuned. 

The new Maggotty Hydroelectric Power Plant will bring to 9, the number of hydro stations owned and operated by JPS.
