JPS has partnered with the United Way of Jamaica to help improve the fire safety standard of 64 early childhood institutions across the island.

JPS has partnered with the United Way of Jamaica to help improve the fire safety standard of 64 early childhood institutions across the island.  Many of the roughly 2,600 basic and infant schools in Jamaica, do not have fire safety equipment, which is a requirement for all early childhood institutions.  This prompted the United Way of Jamaica, to launch a project with the goal of outfitting several locations with fire extinguishers to protect lives and property in the eventuality of such a disaster.  JPS underwrote the project to supply 64 units at a cost of $650,000.

This week, the first fire extinguishers were handed over to the Principals of the  Allman Town Infant and Denham Town Basic Schools.  The handing over ceremony took place at the 125-year-old Allman Town Infant School in Kingston, which has over 140 students on roll. 

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, JPS President and CEO, Kelly Tomblin, explained that the support came as part of the energy company’s focus on education and youth development; as well as the Company’s renewed thrust to re-engage customers at every level, and connect with the community in a more powerful way.

President and CEO of the United Way of Jamaica, Mrs. Winsome Wilkins, in addressing the teachers and students at Allman Town Infant School, commended the teachers for their tremendous effort in helping to shape the lives of tomorrow’s adults.
