Today, Thursday, October 13, 2011 is being observed as International Day
for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). Sanctioned by the United Nations Secretariat
for the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), this day is
observed annually to raise global awareness.

The theme for this year’s campaign Making Youth Partners for Disaster Risk
Reduction with the slogan "Step Up for Disaster Risk Reduction" where the
UNISDR secretariat is calling for action to all youth/children to step up
to the challenge and lead others in the efforts, involvement and
participation in Disaster Risk Reduction.

The intent or framing behind this call seeks to remove youth from the
victim scenario and position them firmly as doers within an environment
that requires solutions oriented thinking and energy. Whereas it is widely
acknowledged that effective risk management must involve those most at
risk, all too often, a valuable resource is being overlooked, and that is
the potential contribution of children. Children are repeatedly portrayed
as victims of disaster and climate change.  Children can and should be
encouraged to participate in disaster risk reduction and decision making.

In recognition of IDDR the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency
Management (ODPEM) in collaboration with the Jamaica Library Service will
be erecting a display to showcase the various hazards that have impacted
the country over the years. The public is invited to view this display at
the Jamaica Library Service headquarters, 2 Tom Redcam Drive, Kingston 5.

The goal of International Day for Disaster Reduction is to be the most
celebrated global day for raising awareness on Disaster Risk Reduction.
