Kingston Criterium set to return May 7

Breakthrough Communications | 2017-05-25 09:00:00

The Kingston Criterium is a closed circuit event with cyclists racing several laps to complete a race. The events will be contested based on categories; including women’s and men’s elite, masters’ and juniors’ categories. In addition to the respective categories there will also be a kids’ sprint event. Cyclists race along the circuit, which includes parts of Ocean Boulevard, Orange Street and Port Royal Street.

The Kingston Criterium is expected to feature some of Jamaica’s finest riders including current national road champion Oshane Williams. 2014 Commonwealth Games cyclist, Marloe Rodman will also be defending his title from an amazing display at the 2016 event.

Andrew Rousseau, Vice President of the JCF and is excited about the event and expects an even better display from the cyclists in 2017 for one of local cycling’s show piece events.
“These are exciting times for cycling. The Criterium has the potential to surpass what we did in 2016 in terms of the entertainment value of the event and the competitiveness. The defending champion, Marloe Rodman, will compete. He is recently back in the island after starting his qualification push for the next Olympics and we have a host of top cyclists and clubs that will be involved. There was another Criterium event, the Harold Blissett Memorial, earlier in the year at Heroes Circle, which had a great turnout and has received rave reviews. That established some momentum heading into the 2017 Kingston Criterium,” said Rousseau.
Jamaica has had good international success in cycling with the ace in hand being a Bronze medal performance by David Weller at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games in the 1KM Time Trial event. To date, that is Jamaica’s only medal outside of Track and Field at the Olympic Games. Former National Champion, Rodman is now in a pursuit to return cycling glory to Jamaica, by first, qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The Kingston Criterium will be one of the marquee events of the Jamaica Cycling Federation’s 2017 calendar and is expected to deliver an entertaining day of racing with a steady diet of speed and thrills. The event is free to the public and runs from 1:00PM – 5:00PM on Sunday, May 7 at the Kingston Waterfront.
