Sagicor Life Jamaica has this year placed even more emphasis on the legacy of Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage through lessons taught at the company’s annual summer school programme.

Marilyn Flynn, Relationship Manager Human Resources is proud of the position the insurance company has taken to expand the cultural elements of this years’ summer school.

“Sagicor is playing its part in sharing Jamaica’s legacy with the children of Jamaica and what better way to do so than through our Summer School. It is Jamaica’s 50th year of independence and our children need to understand the magnitude of this achievement for our nation” explains Flynn.

With over 100 children enrolled in the 2012 Sagicor Summer School; Coordinator, Barbara Kerr, affectionately called Aunty Barbara is pleased at how receptive the children have been to learning about Jamaican tradition.

“This year has been even more fun than previous years for the children. It is quite an experience to watch their little eyes light up when they hear the various practices of our ancestors and sing along to Jamaican folk songs.”
Each year, the programme culminates with a concert and 2012 has proven to be extra special with the children participating in Sagicor’s Jamaica Day Concert and Heritage Display held on August 3 at the R. D. Williams building, Sagicor Centre in New Kingston.

With scores of customers, parents and onlookers in attendance, the children presented their highly anticipated choreographed routines by way of song, dance, instrument and dialect. The children opened the celebrations with a musical selection of This is the land of my birth – a traditional Jamaican song.

The Summer School which accommodates children from ages 3 to 15 years is located on Dumfries Road in New Kingston is strongly supported by parents who are employees of the Sagicor Group.
The life insurance company has also continued its Summer Employee Training Programme formulated some seven years ago in an effort to provide employment experience and mentoring opportunities to several youth from troubled communities. The programme has grown exponentially over the years from some 40 students to just about 130 university and sixth form students for summer 2012.
